  • 1 What Is OSHA?
    OSHA stands for Occupational Safety and Health Authority, is the government Agency under Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability), its responsibility is to oversee the implementation of the occupational health and safety Act of 2003.
  • 2 What Is OSHA Dealing For?
    OSHA is responsible for improving the Occupational health and safety of workers and workplaces by ensuring that all workers and workplaces are free from occupational injuries and diseases
  • 3 When Was OSHA Established?
    It was established since 2001, and the parliament passed its Act in 2003. It has been set up as a part of the government plan for improving the provision of services to the public carried out under the Executive Agencies Act no.30 of 1997.
  • 4 What Are The Responsibilities Of OSHA?
    The agency has four main responsibilities which are:

    To oversee the implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act no 5. of 2003
    To advice the government on things relating to Occupational Safety and Health, Policy, Principles and Guidelines for health and safety supervision in the country.
    To enhance better understanding among people about occupational safety and health through trainings and professional consultancy.
    To conduct various researches on occupational health and safety and to recommend to the government on the batter ways of implementing the Executive Agencies Act no.30 of 1997.
  • 5 What Are The Daily Activities Done By OSHA?
    The agency is doing different activities including:

    To register workplaces
    To conduct general and specific inspections in the workplaces. Example electrical safety inspection, Pressure vessels inspection, Lifting appliances inspections etc.
    To conduct risk assessments in workplaces.
    Scrutinization of workplace drawings to ensure that they meet minimum OHS standards.
    To conduct health and diseases screening to workers according to the nature of their workplaces.
    To conduct accident’s investigation
    To conduct Industrial hygiene surveys and measurements in the workplaces and providing professional advice about occupational health and safety.

  • 7 What types of inspection OSHA is conducting?
    OSHA is inspecting workplaces in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act no.5 of 2003 chapter 297. The types of inspections include; general inspection, mechanical security inspection, electrical safety inspection, pressure vessels inspection, Lifting appliances inspection, geonomics assessments, safety inspection in construction activities etc.
    These inspections are conducted according to the work plan which assures that all workplaces are inspected at least once per year followed by monitoring inspections, in fact any inspection can be conducted at any time when is necessary.

  • 10 If I have a small workplace for at least three workers, do I suppose to register my workplace?
    According to the Act, all workplaces must register to OSHA so that they can be enrolled in the book of the Chief Occupational Safety Officer of the country.
  • 11 What Are The Benefits Of Being Registered By OSHA?
    Firstly, is to fulfill the will of the Occupational Safety and Health Act no. 5 of 2003, secondly, being recognized by OSHA you can benefit from services like inspections services and this will help employers to know some guidelines on how to protect their employees against the occupational injuries and diseases, lastly the registered ones will be provided with professional advice on occupational safety and health.
  • 12 Is there any difference between Health testing by OSHA and by Municipal?
    Health testing to workers conducted by doctors from the hospitals and that conducted by doctors from OSHA is different. In most cases the doctors from hospital they are testing to identify the presence of diseases and to prevent the possibility of epidemic diseases to harm their clients example Typhoid and Cholera, while doctors from OSHA they are looking for occupational diseases and it is conducted into three stages firstly, is when the person is employed, secondly when the person is at work and lastly when the person is leaving the job (whether retiring or terminated) according to the Act.
  • 13 Are There Any Standards For Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?
    Yes, there is standards set according to the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) whose is responsible for setting and managing quality of commodities both imported from outside the country and homemade. Furthermore, the principles of appropriate use of the personal protective equipment at work, its maintenance and quality according to nature of the work is prepared and managed by OSHA.
  • 14 Cheap Labors Who Do Not Have Contracts, Which In Most Cases They Are Working In Construction Activities, Are They Need To Test Their Health?
    The Employment and Labor relation Act of Tanzania doesn’t recognize cheap labors, but it defined that all workers whether with contracts or not, have the same rights example rights to be provided with OSHA services like health checkups, protective tools and other services.
  • 15 Does OSHA Recognize HIV/AIDs At Workplaces?
    OSHA is recognizing this disease as what the international Health organization instructs, that in every workplace there must be the HIV/AIDs policy and there is a guideline to prepare that policy according to the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), therefore when inspecting workplaces, OSHA will also need to see the policy.
  • 16 Does Every Year I Suppose To Have A Certificate Compliance?
    It is true, in every year employers are supposed to have a certificate of compliance of the Occupational health and safety Act (Compliance License) after the inspection, health testing to workers, first aid training to the Safety and Health Committee.
  • 17 The Compensation to worker who injured at Workplace
    OSHA doesn’t compensate to any worker who injured at work, but according to the Act OSHA is responsible for protecting workers against the occupational injuries and diseases, but if a worker is injured at work, then he/she will be supposed to follow the procedures for accessing treatment services or compensation from Worker’s Compensation Fund (WCF)

  • 19 Does OSHA Inspect Garage?
    Yes, garage is a workplace same to other thus why is inspected so that to be provided with a technical advice on how put a strictly system that protects workers against occupational risks.
  • 20 Does OSHA Inspect Motorist (Boda Boda)?
    OSHA does not inspect motorist, because motorists are inspected according to the Road Traffic Act, but OSHA will inspect only if they have an official location as their office or garage.
